New York Launch of Análisis de la programación de la televisión abierta dominicana

June 15, 2016

The Graduate School of Journalism at City University of New York (CUNY) will host the launch of the book Análisis de la programación de la televisión abierta dominicana (Analysis of the Programming of the Dominican Broadcasting Television) next Thursday, June 23rd in New York and it will be conducted by the Research Center of Communication Funglode (CIC-Funglode). Elina María Cruz, coordinator of the publication and director of the center, will attend the
event, organized by GFDD / Funglode, along with other academics, politicians, and media. "This is an unprecedented investigation on television programming, while showing the peculiarities of Dominican society and concerns about the behavior of the citizen viewer" Cruz explains.

The study, by Jenny Almonte and Vanessa Duran, analyzes programming on 17 different channels of Dominican broadcast television to determine the basic characteristics of the spaces
that make up the grid. The research was conducted with the collaboration of Professor Josep Lluís Micó, research consultant and author of the prologue, as part of the working arrangements with the Faculty of Communication and International Relations Blanquerna Ramon Llull University of Barcelona.

The
first part of the book is the results of the analysis of 567 programs offered on Dominican broadcast television. They evaluated the characteristics of the grids by taking into account different aspects: the year when the programs were constituted; presence and use of the web and social media to broaden the audience; and country of origin, genres, and formats of the productions.

The spaces that occupy children’s content, news and advertising, among others, are
part of the publication. They also reveal relevant information about the ability of programs, depending on their gender and professional profiles, to demonstrate the correlation between men and women.

In the second part, journalists Pedro Caba and Melvin Peña; the lawyer specializing in audiovisual regulation, Gabriela Beltre; and writer Elvira Dulce de los Santos, reflect on the diagnosis derived from research and the many questions that generate television products that
are consumed by Dominicans.

Caba refers to "Public media"; Peña to "Dominican television of the XXI Century" and Beltre to "The new audiovisual order". De los Santos shares his vision on "The challenge of producing for the young audience."
