GFDD/Funglode Signs an Agreement with CUNY Graduate School of Journalism

April 28, 2016

Dr. Leonel Fernández signed yesterday, on behalf of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), a memorandum of understanding with the Graduate School of Journalism of the City University of New York (CUNY), with the perspective of future inter-institutional academic collaborations.

Inter-institutional commitment is executed with the objective of promoting and developing opportunities for
academic collaboration between the two institutions, mainly with regard to granting opportunities to Dominican journalists to take courses in different areas of communication. These areas include studies in digital journalism, audiovisual techniques, and social networks strategies, among others.

On behalf of CUNY the memorandum was signed by Sarah Bartlett, Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism of the academic institution.

Another section of the
document provides that the future mutual initiatives of GFDD/Funglode and CUNY will be developed taking into account the regulations and customs of the Dominican Republic and United States.

According to the agreement, the inter-institutional commitment will be valid for a period of five years and may be renewed for another two years, with the consent of both parties.

Founded in 1847, the City University of New York (CUNY) includes 11 senior colleges,
seven community colleges, and five graduate and professional schools, such as the School of Law, the School of Journalism and the Graduate Center, which grants doctoral programs in different areas of studies.

Through its School of Journalism, CUNY equips communicators to tell stories using print, broadcast, and interactive formats, to work in multimedia newsrooms and report in specialty areas, while undergoing rigorous instruction in the traditional skills, standards, and
ethics of journalism.
