April 25, 2016
Rajendra Pachauri (born in Nainital, India, on August 20, 1940) visited today the offices of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) in New York, where he met with the President of Funglode/GFDD, Dr. Leonel Fernández and the Executive Director of GFDD, Natasha Despotovic. Pachauri was leader of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 2000 to 2015, during
which time the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. During the meeting, Dr. Pachauri and Dr. Fernández discussed several collaboration projects in the area of environment and sustainable socio-economic development.
Dr. Pachauri highlighted the “astonishing job that GFDD and Funglode carry out in the areas of environment and sustainable development, under the
leadership of a person of the stature of Dr. Leonel Fernández.”
Pachauri, one of the most outstanding voices in the issue of climate change at international level, has been the Director- General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), an organization dedicated to research and public policy in India,
and Chancellor of the Department of Policy Studies at TERI University; in addition to being the President of the Board of Directors of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and Chairman of the Board of the International Research Institute for Climate and Society of the Columbia University. He was also founding Director of the Yale Climate & Energy Institute (YCEI), as
well as being its Chief Advisor between July 2009 and June 2012.
Nowadays the expert presides Protect our Planet (POP), foundation that aims to empower youth to have an active participation in addressing issues of climate change faced by our planet. Moreover, the movement connects global youth to Dr. R. K. Pachauri, who brought the issue of climate change on the international agenda and led the Nobel Peace Laureate Organization- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change. “After a long time I’ve reached the conclusion that the work must be carried out with all young people around the world”, explained Pachauri.
“While countries and governments continue to negotiate at various climate summits, the efforts still remain woefully short of meeting real targets on reducing Green House Gas emissions. So what’s next? Well, the onus is really on those to whom the future belongs- the youth!
This is an invite to create a movement to protect our planet.”
