Yo Soy la Salsa Returns to D.C. for Encore Screening after Successful DFS
December 2, 2015
The second day of the GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase on November 20th came with an abundance of rhythm provided by Latin music legend Johnny Pacheco. Due to its successful showing and at the requests of the audience, Yo Soy la Salsa will have an encore showing on December 8th. The documentary, which follows the beginnings of the salsa music genre, includes interviews with music legend Johnny Pacheco and other influential individuals. Salsa became
a cultural movement that emerged at a time where strengthening Latin culture was greatly needed, and still gets people out onto the dance floor even 50 years later.
The documentary “Yo Soy la Salsa,” directed by Manuel Villalona and produced by Andrés
Van der Horst, is an homage to the maestro of Salsa, as told through his own testimonies as well as his friends and colleagues, including Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, Isidro Infante, Eddie Montalvo, Marc Anthony, Oscar de León, and Milly Quezada.
The Art Museum of the Americas was the venue for the first screening in an intimate evening that enabled the audience to learn details – up to now almost totally unknown – about the life of this musical idol born in the
Dominican city of Santiago de los Caballeros.
This special showing of Yo Soy la Salsa is a joint initiative of GFDD and the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States. The screening will contain English subtitles and will take place on Tuesday, December 8th at 3:00 p.m. at the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Washington, D.C. This event is free and open to the public, however space is limited. To RSVP for this exciting and unique
showing, please email mabreu@globalfoundationdd.org.
