CILA 2015 Closes with Awards to Delegations

The overflowing enthusiasm of the students and teachers at the closing ceremony of CILA 2015 on Sunday, October 25, organized by UNA-DR, showed the quality of the meeting.
(Santo Domingo October 25, 2015) – The presentation of awards to outstanding delegations by Committees and educational institutions on Sunday, October 25, crowned the International Conference of the Americas (CILA) 2015, organized by the United Nations Association of the
Dominican Republic (ANU-RD).
The initiative of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), which opened on Thursday, October 22, gathered hundreds of young students in an atmosphere of diplomacy and cooperation at the Model United Nations, in a quest for finding solutions to the challenges facing the international community.
The head table at the closing ceremony included Emil
Chireno, Executive Director of ANU-RD; William Yotive, Educational Outreach Manager of the Department of Public Information of the United Nations (UN); Jhomairy Peralta, Secretary General of CILA 2015; Claudia Taboada, General Manager of the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (ANU-RD); María Hernández, President-elect of the Council of Educators; Damián Cardona, Director of the Information Center of the United Nations in Dakar; Benjamin Goldfrank, Professor at the School
of Diplomacy of Seton Hall University; and Jorge Fanlo, Deputy Resident Coordinator of the United Nations and Representative of the World Food Program in the Dominican Republic.
Peralta
thanked the students and teachers for the level of commitment they displayed during the debates to achieve a high level of participation. He expressed satisfaction for having achieved a high quality activity, which renews CILA’S growth and its impact on the training of the members of the committees, delegations, and the press corps.
Dr. Goldfrank was responsible for the keynote speech, in which he addressed the future of Latin America. He said that the region,
despite facing many challenges and situations of uncertainty, is able to see the present with optimism.
Chireno and Peralta led the presentation of special awards to recognize contributions to the successful development of CILA 2015. The awardees were: Yotive, Goldfrank, and Cardona.
The screening of the video “Best of the International Conference of the Americas, CILA 2015” was one of the most emotional moments of the
ceremony, only topped by the excitement caused by the announcement and presentation of awards to outstanding delegations by Committees: Camp David Conference, Moscow Conference, Technology Titans Special Committee, Millennium Assembly (Historical), Consejo de Seguridad, Security Council, Press Corps, United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Court of justice (ICJ), and General Conference of the International Atomic Energy
Agency.
The presentation of awards to institutions of higher education and elementary and secondary education was one of the highlight moments, together with the presentation of awards to institutions of Small, Medium, and Large representation.
The closing remarks by the General Secretary of CILA 2015 were followed by thunderous applause.
