UN General Assembly Transmits to its Seventieth Session the Outcome Document on the Post 2015 Development Agenda

GFDD was present for the 101st plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly as it decided to transmit to its seventieth session the outcome document entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, for adoption during the 25-27 September UN summit on the post-2015 development agenda.

H. E. Sam Kutesa, President of the Assembly’s sixty-ninth session, chaired the meeting in the presence of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Catherine Pollard, Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management.

President Kutesa commented on the historic meeting by stating that “the resolution of the meeting was a fitting conclusion of the three year negotiation. It took a spirit of compromise by all to arrive at this
point. We have proven that we can work together”. Turning to the state delegates in the room he noted that “Integrating the new agenda into our (countries’) national development agendas will be critical”.

He concluded his intervention by paying tribute to the Co-Facilitators of the Post 2015 Development Agenda process, H.E. David Donoghue, Permanent Representative of Ireland, and H.E. Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of
Kenya for their “steadfast commitment in steering the negotiations to a conclusion” and noted that “we have put our world on a more inclusive sustainable path”.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon remarked on the importance of the agenda, explaining that “it marks a paradigm shift, as it completes the unfinished business of Millennium Development Goals and recognizes the three pillars of Sustainable Development, while highlighting the centrality of the Rule of Law”. He addressed the General Assembly to stress to delegate “we expect political leaders to endorse timely implementation of this new agenda. Let us work with determination to reach that destination.”

Speaking on behalf of G77 and China,
the Delegate for South Africa stated that the new agenda document  is “not perfect but delivers a meaningful and ambitious development agenda that builds on the MDGs in the spirit of an enduring partnership for sustainable development”.

The 70th Regular Session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to open at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 15 September 2015. On 25 September 2015, His Holiness Pope Francis will address the UNGA, and from 25-27
September the Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda will convene. The General Debate of the 70th Session of the UNGA will take place from 28 September – 6 October 2015.
