Building Networks and Promoting Alliances between Young Dominican Professionals in the United States and Dominican Businesses

GFDD and the American Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic organized a meeting between the delegation of Dominican Week 2015 and Dominican professionals working in the United States

Dozens of young Dominican professionals living in the United States, Dominican businesspeople, and representatives from governmental, private, and non-governmental sectors gathered yesterday at the event, organized by the Global Foundation for
Democracy and Development (GFDD) and the American Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR), as part of Dominican Week XXIII. The lively gathering, held at the GFDD office in Washington D.C., was the perfect atmosphere for networking and promoting partnerships among these talented young representatives of international and governmental organizations, universities, private companies, non-governmental organizations, and the Dominican entrepreneurs who are part of the delegation
currently visiting the United States for Dominican Week 2015.

The meeting was officially inaugurated by GFDD Executive Director, Natasha Despotovic, who highlighted the Foundation’s efforts, since its inception, to seek the “advancement of global collaboration and exchange relevant to Dominican professionals, general audiences, and institutions in the homeland and abroad, as cited in our mission statement.” In addition, Ms. Despotovic thanked the American Chamber of
Commerce in the Dominican Republic for once again working with the GFDD to fulfill this objective, “as it has done in recent years.”

After comments by Mr. Iban Campo, AMCHAMDR’s Director of Corporate Communication, Ms. Despotovic turned the floor over to participants who introduced and explained the work they do in the various institutions they represent. “It is a great joy and honor for us to publicize the outstanding effort and
excellent work done by these young Dominicans to get where they are today,” Ms. Despotovic said at the close of the activity.

Numerous personalities attended the meeting, including US Ambassador in the Dominican Republic, James Brewster, Jr.; Carlos Fernández, President of the Electromechanical Consortium; David Searby from the US State Department; Josefina Diéguez de Vicini, Director of Communications and International Relations of the Vicini Group; and
Manuel Tavares, of DP World Caucedo.

Organizations in attendance included the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Organization of American States (OAS), Georgetown University, American University, Technologic Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC), and the National Council for Private Enterprise (CONEP in Spanish).

Private companies from various sectors also attended, including some
such as telecommunications, agribusiness, logistics, manufacturing, energy, banking, and finance and real estate, as well as law firms and the Dominican government.

GFDD and Dominican Week in NYC
The Dominican Week delegation will participate in another activity jointly organized by GFDD, AMCHAMDR, and the National Supermarket Association (NSA) in which the topic will be Corporate Social Responsibility and commerce between the Dominican
Republic and New York, with a focus on sustainable development.
