Over 300 Students Will Participate in the Tenth Edition of the Dominican Republic Model United Nations Conference in New York

During the event, organized by the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR) with support from GFDD/Funglode between March 29 and April 2, youth will have the opportunity to participate in simulations of the United Nations General Assembly and vote on project resolutions from the seats occupied by the official representatives of the 193 Member States of this international organization.

Some 330 Dominican students from
various schools throughout the country will participate in the tenth edition of the Dominican Republic Model United Nations Conference in New York, to be held from March 29 to April 2 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel and the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations Organization (UN). During the event, organized by the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR) with support from GFDD/Funglode, participating youth will have the opportunity to take part in simulations of the
United Nations General Assembly and vote on project resolutions from the seats occupied by the official representatives of the 193 Member States of this international organization. In addition, and in parallel, the event will host a program for teachers, in which GFDD/Funglode will organize a number of activities.

NYDRMUN is the only academic event that is held in the Spanish language in the United Nations General Assembly Hall, in addition to being the first to be held
after its renovation. "In recognition to the quality of the Model United Nations that the UNA-DR has organized for the past 10 years, we have received the privilege of the international agency providing us the space for the celebration of this event, during which students will occupy the same seats from where the Heads of State address the world," noted Emil Chireno, Executive Director of the institution.

Participants in the NYDRMUN 2015 have been
preparing since the month of February on each of the committees and topics, including the Plenary Session of the General Assembly (PGA); the Security Council; the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) of the United National Environment Program, and the Military Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (MC-NATO), among others.

Program for Teachers
As part of the agenda of the Model Conference, GFDD/Funglode has prepared a schedule of events to take place during those five days for the 60 Dominicans teachers accompanying the young students. Topics such as Education and the Closing of the Digital Divide; the Power of the STEM Education Model; How to Identify the Learning Needs of
the Students; and Promoting Reading in the Classroom, are among those that will be addressed during the sessions organized for March 30 and 31.

The Coordinator of education and educational technology at Funglode, Paul Goris, will present "The video as a learning tool: NYDRMUN 2015 Project," while the Specialist on social networks at the institution, Idrialis Castillo, will speak on "Social media in the classroom 3.0".

Scholarship
The United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR) and Funglode’s Global Institute of Higher Studies in Social Sciences (iGlobal), will award a scholarship to the most outstanding college student in the Standing Committee of the Executive Committee of the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The winner of the scholarship may choose from any of the existing graduate programs in 2015, which, among other features, are dual degree programs and have a total cost of ten thousand dollars ($10,000). The scholarship will cover the equivalent to sixty percent (60%) of the total cost of the tuition.
