Dominican Diaspora in NY Rejoices with Documentary Orgullo de mi Tierra: Descubre Puerto Plata
November 2, 2014An enthusiastic audience participated on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Dominican Get Together organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), where the documentary Orgullo de mi Tierra: Descubre Puerto Plata was screened. The activity, held at the Symphony Space, was made in collaboration with the Clúster Turístico del Destino Puerto Plata, the Puertoplateños Association of the United States and Centro Cuesta Nacional (CCN).
Yamile Eusebio Paulino, GFDD New York Office Director, offered welcoming remarks, which highlighted the importance of supporting activities that unite the Dominican diaspora. “Dominican Get Together, as well as other initiatives of GFDD / Funglode,seeks to strengthen the pride of being Dominican and present the culture and kindness of the Dominican Republic from a different perspective," she
said. Ms. Eusebio Paulino thanked the attendees for the support they have always given to activities organized by the Foundation.
GFDD’s institutional video was screened after the greetings, and Mrs. Jakaira Cid, Executive Director of the Clúster Turístico del Destino Puerto Plata, introduced a short prepared by the Clúster on the province of Puerto Plata, followed by the documentary,where attendees learned about the culture, folklore, gastronomy and kindness of the "Novia del Atlántico" (Bride of the Atlantic).
After the film screening attendees shared with
Jakaira Cid, of the Clúster, and Manny Burgos, Director of the Association of Puertoplateños in the United States.
At the end of the activity there was a raffle among the attendees, where the Clúster Turístico del Destino Puerto Plata gave away two weekend vacations in hotels in Puerto Plata. The winners were Luis Serraro and Robinson Pérez. Likewise, GFDD gave away a copy of New Perspectives: Dominican Republic, a bestseller in the Dominican Republic,
winned by Mrs. Torres and a Dominican Republic Encyclopedic Dictionary of Environment winned by Luis Amauris Martínez.
Orgullo de mi Tierra: Descubre Puerto Plata , a 47-minute documentary produced by Centro Cuesta Nacional (CCN), showed the religious believes, the folkloric expressions, the cultural diversity, the architecture, the history and gastronomic richness of Puerto Plata, also known as “la novia del Atlántico” (Atlantic’s [ocean]
bride). Through the CCN series Orgullo de mi Tierra, the audience can learn about the religious beliefs, folklore and gastronomy and ecological diversity of the emblematic areas of the Dominican Republic.
GFDD is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting collaboration among organizations in the United States and the Dominican Republic in order to conduct research, enhance public debate, shape public policy, proposing strategies and provide training to
