GFDD and FUNGLODE Announce Launch of Research and Ideas Diaspora Book At Medgar Evers College

March 25, 2014

On April 8, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development will be launching the English Version of one of its publications from the Research and Ideas Series at the book presentation of one of its most recent editions, "The Presence of Africa in the Caribbean, the Antilles and the United States."

The book, which was released in Spanish last year, seeks to elevate the discourse on the historical
journey of people of African descent throughout the continent, and to promote understanding of how this journey continues to shape modern society. "The Presence of Africa in the Caribbean, the Antilles and the United States” introduces the work of 16 national and international specialists, who participated in the international conference of the same name which was held by GFDD/FUNGLODE in July 2011.

Dominican writers such as Celsa Albert Batista, Lipe Collado, Franklin J. Franco, José Guerrero, Rafael Jarvis Luis, Mateo Morrison, Odalis G. Pérez, Geo Ripley, José Luis Sáez, Avelino Stanley and Darío Solano joined forces with international authors, such as Delia Blanco, Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, Jean Ghasmann Bissainthe, Melina Pappademos and Roger
Toumson to realize the book, published the following year.

The book, which has already been successfully showcased last October at the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD’s) 7th Biennial Conference in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as well as at the 7th Annual Dominican Book Fair at New York’s Boricua College Manhattan  in September, 2013, serves as an invaluable resource for not-for-profit organizations,
academics, and international scholars whose mission is to further an understanding of the African Diaspora. It also promotes the academic exchange of ideas related to African identity, race, feminist issues, and historical migration, all viewed through the lens of the African Diaspora.

The venue of the book launch is especially significant, as it will take place at one of New York’s top colleges Medgar Evers, part of the City University of New York, in
Brooklyn.

The College, established in 1970 is named after Medgar Wiley Evers, a  black civil rights activist who, while serving in  World War II, became disenchanted by the knowledge that he was fighting for freedom halfway around the world while he and other American blacks endured segregation and other forms of racism.

The event, which takes place at 4pm at Edison O. Jackson Auditorium, will include a panel discussion with authors of the
book and senior academics.
