GFDD and FUNGLODE Participates in Latino Poetry Festival with Dominican Poet Basilio Belliard

October 3, 2013

The Latin American Poetry Festival in NYC is holding its 2nd annual gathering of Latin poets on October 9, 10, and 11 as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

GFDD/FUNGLODE, a partner in this initiative, is participating in this popular poetry gathering by hosting renowned Dominican poet Basilio Belliard. This Festival, already a major cultural event in New York City, celebrates the literary creativity and Hispanic heritage of the United States, according to
organizers who point out that nearly 40 million people speak Spanish in the United States. Local, national and international poets are invited to attend this year’s Festival.

Basilio Belliard (Moca 1966), Dominican writer, poet, editor and university professor will travel
from Santo Domingo, hosted by GFDD/FUNGLODE, to represent his country at this celebration of the “language of Cervantes.” A prolific writer with numerous publications, Belliard received the National Poetry Prize in 2002 for his popular Sueño escrito. Viewed as one of the best poets of his day, Mr. Belliard will read from his new as well as older work. Belliard recently held the post of Director of the Literary Department of the Minister of
Culture.

Basilio will participate in three events at the Poetry Festival. On Wednesday October 9th, he will be the second speaker at the inauguration of the Festival, which will begin at 6 pm. The following day, Thursday the 10th, he will participate in a roundtable discussion with four other poets about modern Latino poetry between 2-5 pm. Later that same day at 6 pm, Basilio will give a lecture. All three of these events are at the City College Center for Worker
Education, 25 Broadway, 7th floor.
