Fourth Meeting of Latin American and Caribbean Documentary Filmmakers Endoc XXI Comes to a Close

March 8, 2013

The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, GFDD, thanks to the support of distinguished documentary filmmaker, Martha Checo, participated in the Fourth Encuentro de Documentalistas de América Latina y del Caribe XXI (EnDocXXI), a gathering of Latin American and Caribbean documentary filmmakers. The meeting was held on March 5-8, 2013 in Mexico as part of the 28th edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG28).

The inauguration took place on March 5th followed up with a round table on the subject of the “Latin American and Caribbean Documentary”, with the participation of
María Guadalupe Ochoa, Óscar Menéndez, Manuel Martínez, and Jaime Tello. GFDD was represented by Braudin Eusebio at the event.
The Fourth Meeting of Latin American and Caribbean Documentary Filmmakers mainly focused, as a follow up, on the manifesto of the previous event, which described the Iberoamerican documentary film as the bearer of the historical memory and identity of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean in opposition
to multicultural genocide.

In addition, issues relevant to the new language of documentary filmmaking, ethics, the need for training and the importance of preserving documentary films as historical memory and social heritage were also discussed.

Mr. Humberto Ríos stressed that “documentary speech, as a language, is alive and that it should be emotional and establish a complicit relationship with the audience; without this, it would
not be worth it, and it would only be a file.” Meanwhile, Braudin Eusebio highlighted the importance of generating impassioned devotees as the only way to preserve historical memory, which is contained in the documentary material. Ms. Eusebio invited the participating documentary filmmakers to get to know the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) and to see it as a platform for showcasing documentary films with emphasis on environment protection.

EnDocXXI is a meeting place for documentary filmmakers working on behalf of the acceptance of otherness and freedom of expression. Previous editions of the Encounter have taken place in Caracas (Venezuela), Guayaquil (Ecuador), and Buenos Aires (Argentina).

GFDD took part in the many conferences, meetings, roundtables and EnDocXXI General Assembly.
