GFDD Strengthens Association with United Nations DPI NGO

As part of its mission to promote and advance issues at the forefront of the United Nations’ agenda, in February 2013, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development as a non-profit, non-partisan organization applied for its official “Association” with the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI).

Over 1,300 NGOs with strong information programmes on issues of concern to the United Nations are associated with the
DPI. It is a double-sided cooperation that gives the UN valuable links to people around the world and helps NGOs gain world recognition and representation at the United Nations.  
The Department of Public Information and NGOs collaborate regularly. NGOs associated with the DPI disseminate information about the UN to their membership, thereby building knowledge of and support for the organization at the grassroots level. This dissemination encompasses publicizing UN
activities around the world on such issues as peace and security, economic and social development, human rights, humanitarian affairs and international law.

To become associated with the DPI, NGOs must meet certain criteria, including support and respect the principles of the Charter of the United Nations; be a reputable NGO with national, regional or international standing; operate on a not-for-profit basis and have tax-exempt status; be an established NGO that has been
operating for at least 3 years; have a satisfactory track record of past work with a UN Information Centre/Service, UN Regional Information Centre or other UN Agency, Fund or Program.

Having successfully submitted its application for the DPI association, GFDD anticipates to continue to strengthen its multisided activities. By partnering with the United Nations and the rest of NGO community, we can make a bigger difference to the planet and its peoples.
