Students at Centro Educativo Los Prados Will Experience Organic Agriculture First-Hand Through DREFF’s School Program

April 23, 2012

On Tuesday, April 24, GFDD’s Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) will bring its School Gardens Initiative to the Centro Educativo Los Prados in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Through the program, students will learn first-hand about organic agricultural production and the properties of recycled organic matter.

The initiative also seeks to enhance middle and high school Natural Science curriculums through the introduction of hands-on, experimental activities. Students also learn about the importance of maintaining a balanced diet. DREFF hopes that afterwards, organic gardening will become a preferred recreational activity among students, and a practice that they can share with family
members and friends.

The impetus behind the initiative arose from the interest sparked among students participating in talks, panels and workshops conducted by Rose Lord during the I Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival. Rose Lord represents the Make Gardens Not War, an initiative of the Global Coalition for Peace, which seeks to encourage the creation of
vegetable gardens around the world.

The School Vegetable Gardens initiative is reflective of DREFF’s overall mission to interact with leading figures in the environmental community and to make a difference. The Festival aims to raise awareness and deepen understanding of environmental issues among Dominican audiences. At the same time, DREFF celebrates the beauty and diversity of the Dominican Republic’s natural heritage and offers insights intended to contribute to its
appreciation, conservation and sustainable use.
